John W. Young is Apollo 16 mission commander. He is scheduled to be launched to the Moon no earlier than March 17, 1972, with Astronauts Thomas K. Mattingly II and Charles M. Duke, Jr. A veteran of two Gemini Earth orbital flights, Young piloted the Apollo 10 command module in lunar orbit in May 1969 while crewmates Thomas P. Stafford and Eugene A. Cernan simulated landing their lunar module on the Moon's surface. Apollo 10 paved the way for Apollo 11, man's first lunar landing two months later.
