During December's successful simulated flight of the Space Shuttle
Orbiter, John W. Young was at the
controls as commander of the primary crew. Young, a retired Navy
Captain, has been flying space
missions since 1965. A veteran of the Gemini program, he flew
on the first manned mission, Gemini 3,
and commanded Gemini 10. Young circled the Moon with Apollo 10
and landed there as commander
of Apollo 16. He is chief of the Astronaut office at the Johnson
Space Center. The first actual Shuttle
mission, and the era of space transportation, begins under his sure
hand.
