Biography
NASA Career - 1973-1977
Young with visitors from the People's Republic of China
- January 1973 - assigned as Chief of the Space Shuttle
Branch of the Astronaut Office - duties included providing operational
and engineering astronaut support for the design and development of the
space shuttle.
With
Apollo ASTP crew
- Was named Acting Chief of the Astronaut Office, April
30, 1974 - responsible for the coordination, scheduling, and control activities
of the astronauts.
When asked about fear on his missions:
"My wife says that when they told me Apollo 16 had a 1 in 5 chance of being
successful, I just shrugged it off. Test pilots don't think about that kind
of stuff. Besides, I had too many switches to learn..."
