The Gemini spacecraft had several improvements over the Mercury capsule. Progress was made in such areas as insulation, fuel capacity, instrumentation, cooling and life support. The Orbit Attitude and Maneuver System (OAMS), a minature propulsion system designed to permit changes in orbit during flight, was another advancement. Using OAMS, a selection of 10 small jets (thrusters) could be used to adjust the high point of orbit (apogee) or low point (perigee) and to make slight changes in the orbital plane. |

"The word 'shy' and all of its synonyms are as much a John Young trademark as the wisp of straight, dark hair that constantly tumbles across his forehead and occasionally peeks out from under his bulbous white space helmet." - The Atlanta Journal, 3-13-65 |
