The
purpose of the Gemini program was to make preparations for the Apollo program
- test equipment, train astronauts, and perfect rendezvous and docking
maneuvers that would be necessary for a successful lunar landing.
In addition, the Gemini program was to continue the studies which had begun
with the Mercury program: to investigate man's capability to perform
in a weightless condition over extended periods of time, to determine psychological
and physiological reactions of crew members to extended flights, and to
carry out scientific investigations of space.
