Although the exact heart rates of Young and Crippen during liftoff vary according to the source, they average out about the same: Crippen with a rate of about 130, Young with a rate of about 80. Houston's explanation: "John has been there before." Young's explanation: "I was just so old my heart wouldn't go any faster." Neil B. Hutchinson's (flight director) explanation: "John was kind of asleep at liftoff."
