Young and Crippen wore U.S. Air Force high-altitude escape suits; these five-layer suits weigh only about 23 pounds, but provide oxygen and full body protection at high altitudes. The escape suits were necessary since the first four shuttle flights were considered test flights and utilized ejection seats. These rocket-propelled ejection seats could have been used up to the 100,000 foot mark; beyond that a human would not be able to survive.
