Interviewer:
Do you feel proud about being the Commander of that first Space Shuttle mission?

Young:
I don't know. I was very pleased to be participating in such a thing, but there are thousands of people that had a lot more to do with the success of that mission than I did, and I was pleased to be associated with an organization that could do such a job.

"There were some people who said we would never be able to get the space transportation system, the shuttle, working, and there are those that say we won't be able to keep it working. All I can say to them is it looks like we've gone out and done exactly what we said we were going to do 10 years ago, and it looks like we will keep doing what we planned to do."
- John Young, Orlando Sentinel, 10-12-85
