- Named to the Astronaut Corp on September 17, 1962 - was one of the "New Nine", the second group of astronauts to be selected - was the first of the group to be assigned to a mission.

- Young's special assignment after being selected for the Astronaut Corp (announced January 22, 1963) was to monitor the design and development of environmental control systems, survival gear, pressure suits, ejection seats, couches and other personal equipment.
